Peanut shells can be processed to produce a plant-based meat substitute, according to the results of a study by American scientists, the online publication Green Queen reported on August 30.
Instead of feeding peanut shells to livestock, it is better to process them to create fibre-rich meat analogues while reducing food waste, say US researchers. They say this could not only reduce food waste, but also improve human health, food security and the agricultural economy. What’s more, this is also supposed to help reduce emissions.
Currently, peanut shells are most commonly processed into animal feed, dried whole material for industrial packaging and filling, and biofuels. The study suggests that this “missed opportunity”since the shell is edible for humans.
Scientists argue that increasing the value of peanut by-products will significantly increase the amount of food available with current land, water and energy use, solve the problem of hunger and benefit farmers (who could sell the shells at a premium compared to cheap animal feed).
