Du Zhaocai, former party secretary of the Chinese Football Association, pleaded guilty at a court hearing in Wuhan to accepting bribes worth more than 43.4 million yuan (6.1 million U.S. dollars), online publication ekd.me reported on August 31.
While serving as deputy director of China’s General Administration of Sport from 2012 to 2022, Du used his position to accept bribes related to player transfers, match management and personnel decisions, a court ruled last week.
Earlier on August 21, former chairman of the Chinese Football Super League’s management company Ma Chengquan was sentenced to 11 years and three months in prison and fined 8 million yuan (1.1 million U.S. dollars) for corruption.
The publication recalls that since 2022, as part of a large-scale campaign against corruption in Chinese football, more than 14 senior football officials and club directors have become the subject of such investigations.
