New Zealand sees a 10% increase in deaths in 2022

Mortality in 2022 in New Zealand increased by 10%, the country’s statistics service reported on February 20, the data was published on the official website.

According to statisticians, COVID-19 played a significant role in the increase in mortality. Of the 34,932 deaths, 2,400 had a “COVID-19-related” cause of death.

The aging of the population has also contributed to the increase in mortality. Nearly two in three deaths in 2022 in New Zealand were people aged 75 and over, and one in five deaths were people aged 90 and over.

At the same time, there has been an increase in the life expectancy of islanders, both men and women.

“Life expectancy in New Zealand has stabilized while it has declined in many countries in recent years, including Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom”said Michael MacAskill, Population and Projection Manager.

According to forecasts, a newborn boy can live an average of 80.5 years, a girl – 84.0 years. By 2048, life expectancy for men is expected to increase by 3.4 years to 84.2 years and for women by 3.2 years to 87.3.
