Polling stations closed in the second round of the Brazilian presidential elections

The day has been marked by more than 500 interventions by the Federal Traffic Police (PRF, for its acronym in Portuguese) that would have hindered the movement of voters mainly in the northeast of the country, an area considered to be close to Lula.

This Sunday at 5:00 p.m. (9:00 p.m. in the Basque Country) the polling stations have closed in Brazil, which elects its next head of state this Sunday in the second round of the presidential elections.

The current president, Jair Bolsonaro, of the extreme right, faces the leftist candidate and former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, with the latter a slight advantage according to the polls.

Lula wins in Portugal

Former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, of the Workers’ Party (PT), has won this Sunday in the three electoral colleges of Portugal. In Lisbon, the largest electoral college outside of Brazil, Lula da Silva obtained 64.5% of the vote, compared to 34.5% obtained by the current president, the far-right Jair Bolsonaro. 64.8% of the votes in Porto (north), have gone to Lula, where Bolsonaro has been voted by 35.2% of the voters. Lula da Silva has also prevailed in Faro (south) with 52% of the vote, compared to 48% for the leader of the extreme right.

The day was marked by the more than 500 interventions who has made the Policeman Federal Traffic of Brazil (PRF, for its acronym in Portuguese) in various areas of the country, interventions of vehicle inspection that provided public transportation for voters.

The president of the TSE, Alexandre de Moraes, expressly prohibited the PRF from carrying out any operation related to the public transport of voters on Saturday so as not to hinder the vote.

Moraes has stated that the police checkpoints they have not prevented voters from exercising their right, but it has still ensured that they have already been suspended.

For its part, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s Workers’ Party (PT) has called for the arrest of the director of the Federal Highway Police for obstructing the elections.

Likewise, Human Rights Watch (HRW) has expressed concern about the checkpoints.

Two candidates, two Brazils

Some 156.4 million Brazilians They were called to the polls this Sunday to choose between the continuity of the far-right president Jair Bolsonaro and the return to power of former progressive president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Bolsonaro and Lula face each other in a second round of elections for which the leader of the Workers’ Party (PT) is the favorite, with an advantage of between four and seven percentage points, according to the latest polls. Voting will take place in the 5,570 cities of the country and in 181 locations abroad.
