China will “resolutely” fight against Taiwan’s “independence” and “for the reunification of the motherland,” outgoing Prime Minister Li Keqiang assured this Sunday at the opening of the plenary session of the National People’s Congress.
“We must carry out the strategy of the Communist Party (CCP) on the Taiwan issue, namely, to resolutely fight against ‘independence’. [do território] and for the reunification of the motherland,” Li said at the presentation of the government report at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
China considers Taiwan part of its territory, not a sovereign political entity, and has threatened to use force to take control of the island. The territory is also a source of tension between Beijing and Washington, Taipei’s main ally and arms supplier.
