German Federal Labor Minister Hubertus Heil (SPD) promised women equal pay with men on March 7, the ZDF TV channel reports.
Currently, the wage gap between women and men is 18%, Heil said on the ZDF morning show. According to the minister, in 11% of cases, the difference in wages between men and women is explained by the choice of profession and the different volume of work.
The so-called “classic female work” is paid less. Also, women are more likely than men to work part-time. The remaining 7% percent is related to wage discrimination.
“We must ensure fairer wages and give young women and men more diverse career options”Heil emphasized. At the same time, the Minister of Labor called for earlier vocational guidance in all schools in Germany.
As a reminder, every year in March, the international campaign “Equal Pay Day” draws attention in Germany to the lower wages of women. This year this company takes place in Germany on March 7th.
