Uzbekistan launches referendum that could allow incumbent president to rule until 2040

The former Soviet republic of Uzbekistan announced this Wednesday that a constitutional referendum will be held at the end of April that could allow incumbent President Shavkat Mirziyoyev to remain in power until 2040.

The proposed revision of Uzbekistan’s constitution, released on Wednesday, proposes to increase the presidential term from five to seven years and specifies that people already in power “have the right to run.” […] regardless of the number of terms already fulfilled in a row.

The new constitution, which changes two-thirds of the current basic law but retains a two-term limit, will be put to a referendum on April 30 in Central Asia’s most populous country of about 35 million.
