IOC to hand over 2034 Olympics to Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City (Utah, USA) is going to cede the right to host the 2034 Winter Olympics to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), USOPC President Jean Sykes said on March 17, according to the portal Inside the Games.

It is reported that this is due to the fact that the organization’s leadership does not intend to hold two Olympic Games in a row on the territory of one country in order to increase revenue from the competition.

“The IOC is looking for a city that would be a good alternative to Salt Lake City to host the 2030 Olympics. They understand our preferences, they have the same preferences for 2034 as we do, if that’s possible.”-Sykes.

He added that this would increase the gap to the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles as they seek to maximize revenue.

He is convinced that Salt Lake City’s bid to host the Olympic Games is more attractive than any other, but the city will be ready to host the Games in 2030 if there is no suitable alternative.

Stockholm and Sapporo are being considered as other options to host the 2030 Olympics. But the Japanese city has suspended the bid due to a corruption scandal linked to the Tokyo Olympics. Vancouver also made a bid to host the games in 2030, but was unable to get approval from the regional government.

The International Olympic Committee announced in December 2022 that it would postpone the selection of a city for the 2030 Winter Games due to climate change and its impact on snow and ice sports.

Recall that Salt Lake City hosted the 2002 Olympic Games. Sapporo hosted the Winter Olympic Games in 1972. The Summer Games were held in Stockholm in 1912.
