The US government will provide $14 million (€13 million) by December to support Mozambique’s fight against tuberculosis, the US embassy said in a statement.
“While Mozambique’s TB program has made tremendous progress in recent years, the country remains among the 14 countries most affected by TB. Tuberculosis is the leading cause of death and the leading cause of death for people living with HIV in Mozambique,” refers to a US note issued on the occasion of World TB Day.
The money should go to the Ministry of Health for Mozambique’s National Tuberculosis Control Program, an initiative the US has supported for more than a decade.
“Thanks to the progress made during this period, we have witnessed incredible progress in the choice of treatment options. For example, in Mozambique, TB patients now have access to treatment they can take at home, effectively minimizing the risk of transmission. sickness to others,” the note adds.
Although Mozambique remains among the top 14 countries most affected by TB, official figures show a detection rate of 95.5%.
According to the Washington Embassy in Maputo, Mozambique receives $500 million (€485 million) annually in aid from the US government to strengthen various social sectors with a focus on society and democracy.
