The 500,000 people who turn 18 this year in Spain will benefit from a €400 grant to use in cultural activities. The royal decree regulating the youth cultural allowance for 2023 was proposed by the Minister of Culture and Sports, Mikel Iseta.
In accordance with El Pais, After much discussion by the Spanish government over the inclusion of bullfighting in this allowance, the Supreme Court overturned the exclusion of bullfighting last February for “lack of evidence.”
To ensure that the money is used in a balanced way across the various sectors of Spanish culture, the beneficiaries will have spending limits in three areas: up to 200 euros for personal events such as performing arts, museums, exhibitions, literary or music festivals or bullfights. Up to 100 euros for books, magazines, video games or CDs. And another 100 euros for online consumption: subscriptions to audiovisual platforms or podcasts, newspapers or online video games.
For the second year in a row, the Spanish government is promoting this initiative. Countries such as Italy and France have already put this type of benefit into practice.
Last year, Spain managed to attract almost 300,000 young people (281,557 people) to this measure, representing 58% of the possible beneficiaries. This year, the ministry says that mechanisms are being implemented to increase this percentage.
