The Russian Army today announced its withdrawal from the annexed Ukrainian city of Khersonthe only regional capital under Russian control in the entire country, which could be a turning point in the Russian invasion and the liberation by Ukraine of territories occupied by Moscow.

“We propose to move the defense to the left bank of the river Dnieper“, announced the head of the group of forces fighting in Ukraine, General Sergei Surovikinreporting to the Defense Minister, Sergei Shoiguwho approved that withdrawal.

The general stressed that under current conditions it is also not possible to supply the Russian military contingent deployed in the area.

Surovikin has stressed that some 9,500 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed or wounded in the region since August, the date on which the Ukrainian Armed Forces launched the counter-offensive in Kherson.

The adviser to the Ukrainian presidential office Mikhailo Podolyak has reacted skeptically to the announcement. “Actions speak louder than words. We see no signs that Russia is going to leave Kherson without a fight,” the adviser wrote on his Twitter account.

Podolyak has claimed that there are still Russian troops in the southern Ukrainian city and that additional reserves are being redirected to the region. “Ukraine liberates territories based on data from its intelligence services and not on statements staged on television”, he has riveted.

Blowing up of the bridges over the Dnieper

Ukraine has confirmed that Russia has blown up the bridges over the Dnieper River. “The occupiers have blown up not only the Darivka and Tiahinka bridges, but also the bridge from the Snihurivka exit to Kherson across the canal, the Novokairi bridge and the Milove bridge,” explained the ‘number two’ of the Kherson Regional Council, Sherhii Jlan, quoted by the Ukrinform news agency.

The Russian-imposed authorities in Kherson ordered in October the evacuation in the region of about 80,000 citizens from the right bank to the left bank of the Dnieper River in the face of the approach of the Ukrainian forces.

Two weeks ago, they also included the provincial capital in their mandatory evacuation plans.

Later they extended the measure also to the left bank of the Dnieper to remove up to 70,000 people from there.

It so happens that the pro-Russian deputy governor of the Ukrainian region of Kherson, Kiril Stremousovhas died today as a result of a car accident, reported the leader of the organization ‘Crimean Volunteers’, Valeria Petrusevich.

Hours earlier, official Ukrainian sources did not rule out a “simulated withdrawal” of the Kherson Russians in order to ambush the Ukrainian troops. The Ukrainian Army has assured that it has intensified its offensive in the eastern regions of Lugansk and Donetsk.

For his part, the Kremlin spokesman, Dimitri Peskovhas made a surprise visit to the Lugansk region, as confirmed on Wednesday by Sergei Kiriyenko, a senior official in the Russian Presidency.

In addition, Russia is strengthening its defense lines in the occupied areas to prevent a rapid advance of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU), especially in Mariupolcoastal city of the Sea of Azov.

The general secretary of the NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, has celebrated the Russian withdrawal, assuring that it is “encouraging” to see the success of the Ukrainian counter-offensives. “We are going to see what happens on the ground, but Russia has already been forced to withdraw in the north, in kyiv, in the east, in Kharkov, and now we see how the Ukrainian troops push out the Russian forces in the south, in Kherson”, pointed out the political head of the Atlantic Alliance.
