The judiciary in Georgia ranks high in various international rankings, and it is unacceptable to Tbilisi that the United States has imposed sanctions against four Georgian judges. This is stated in a letter to US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken from Georgia’s Foreign Minister Ilya Darchiashvili released on April 6 by the Georgia department.
Darchiashvili noted that work on judicial reform continues in Georgia to further strengthen the independence and transparency of the courts’ work. He urged Blinken to provide evidence that the judges who fell under the sanctions are involved in corruption or remove the restrictions.
“Otherwise, the Georgian state and the Georgian people will perceive this as pressure on an independent court of a sovereign state and serious interference in its activities, which will damage long-term friendly bilateral relations between Georgia and the United States.” .Darchiashvili emphasized.
Recall that on April 5 Blinken announced the imposition of sanctions against Georgian judges Levan Murusidze, Mikhail Chinchaladze, Valerian Tsertsvadze and Irakli Shengelia. The Georgian opposition accuses them of creating a “clan” in the judiciary. In the United States they said that these judges are involved in acts of corruption.
