Prison guards leaders admit to asking for an exemption after a trade union in the sector warned the government on Wednesday about working conditions in prisons that pose an “imminent danger of serious events.”
The Allied Association of Chiefs of Prison Guards (ASCCGP) expressed its concern to Assistant Secretary of State and Justice (SEAJ) Jorge Alves Costa at a meeting on Wednesday, where he warned of a lack of resources, aging and absenteeism in the profession, lack of career attractiveness and the harmfulness of the functions performed. .
According to the ministry statement, SEAJ “has identified steps that have been taken by the Department of Justice, in conjunction with other areas of government, to obtain the necessary pre-approvals to open competitive procedures for promotion to higher categories. emphasizing recognition of your need.”
“However, he ensured that any decision reflects the consensus decision of the government, and not just the governmental justice sector, based on a global vision of all careers and all employees that make up the public administration, and respecting the necessary harmonization and sustainability of the system,” adds the Ministry of Justice.
At the meeting, Jorge Alves Costa also spoke about the work done by the Ministry of Justice “in various aspects related to careers, namely in relation to performance evaluation, salary increases and working conditions.”
Speaking to Lusa agency, ASCCGP president Hermínio Barradas mentioned that the union structure took note of the government’s “demonstration of intent” by taking the opportunity to “warn of the imminent danger of serious events in circuits immediately”, apologizing for the public exposure of such serious situations on for reasons of secrecy and internal security.
At the same meeting, the ASCCGP also warned the Department of Justice of its “failure to contain such grave events” that were about to happen in the prisons, and gave the government a “reasonable time” to “effectively fulfill” the promises and demands associated with the Prison Guard Chiefs’ competition.
Herminio Barradas advised that if there is no reasonable speed in resolving this and other issues identified by the ASCCGP, the union structure is considering filing a “request for disclaimer” for any serious events that may occur in prisons.
