The chairman of Germany’s largest opposition party, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Friedrich Merz surpassed German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) in the popularity rating, the n-tv channel reports on April 11.
According to the results of a sociological study by the Forsa service, commissioned by the RTL and N-tv channels, when choosing between Scholz, Merz and Vice Chancellor Robert Habek, 23% of those surveyed give preference to the CDU leader. 21% are willing to support the current chancellor, 18% would vote for Khabek.
Had the election been between Scholz, Merz and current Foreign Minister Annalena Burbock, the CDU chief would have received an even higher number of votes: 25%. 24% of those polled would vote for Scholz and 19% for Burbock.
The study is reported to have been conducted from April 4 to 6, 2023.
