The Angolan government is following the political and security situation in Sudan with “great concern” and has said it is taking steps to expel the country’s citizens, ten of whom are already on their way to other countries.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Angola announces the readiness of the government to evacuate Angolan citizens from the territory of Sudan, taking into account the resumption of armed conflict in that country,” MIREX said in a communiqué, highlighting concerns about the deteriorating political and security situation in Sudan.
According to MIREX, five citizens who studied in Sudan’s capital Khartoum are already on their way to the land border between Sudan and Ethiopia, specifically to the city of Gallabat/Metema in the regional state of Amhara.
Another five are heading to Egypt as part of the evacuation process coordinated with South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO).
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reports that the necessary steps are being taken to ensure that the Angolan diplomatic missions in Cairo and Addis Ababa carry out a voluntary evacuation to Luanda of the directed citizens,” the press release says.
The conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Paramilitary Rapid Reaction Force (SFOR) has escalated since April 15 and has already claimed more than 400 lives, exacerbating the humanitarian situation in the region.
