A new equipment for collecting biometric data will appear on border stations

According to the resolution, the border posts at the airports will be equipped with new equipment for collecting biometric data as part of the new entry and exit system (EES) of the European Union.

The document published on Wednesday in Diário da Reption, states that these investments will amount to about 2.5 million euros plus VAT, 75% of which will be financed by the internal security fund.

The decision authorizes the service on foreigners and border guards (SEF) or an organization that will replace it in terms of monitoring the movement of people at the borders, take on budget expenses related to the implementation of the contract for the purchase, installation, assistance of maintenance and maintenance of equipment To collect biometric data at hand -made border control points in the amount of up to 2.5 million euros.

The government justifies these investments with strategic leadership principles adopted by the European Council, which emphasizes “the urgent need for the effective management of the common external boundaries of the European Union, in particular, thanks to the new stage of the Smart Borders initiative. aimed at facilitating the passage of the vast majority of travelers from third countries and, at the same time, to strengthen the fight against illegal migration by creating a register of all transnational movements of citizens with full observance of the principle of proportionality. ”

According to the Decree signed by the State Secretary of Civil Defense by Patricia Gaspar and on the budget by Sofia Batalya, the European Commission proposed to create an extravasal system (EES), the purpose of which is to collect identification and biometric data citizens of third countries, visa and visa -free travelers crossing the external border of the Schengen Zone .

“Given that the GEF, in agreement with the Ministry of Internal Affairs, is responsible for the implementation and integration of the EEC system, it is supposed to continue the purchase and installation of equipment for collecting biometric data at manual border controls, within the framework of the Smart Borders project, 75% of which is funded from the internal security fund including three -year technical assistance and maintenance in order to comply with various decrees of the European Parliament and Council, ”the resolution says.
