Venezuela begins consultations on a law to protect the country’s assets

National public consultations on the bill to protect the assets, rights and interests of the Republic of Venezuela abroad, began to be held in the Parliament of Venezuela, reports Prensa Latina on May 12.

Julio José Zerpa, first vice president of the Permanent Commission on Domestic Policy, explained that he was instructed to collect proposals for the discussion of the law, which consists of two chapters and 11 articles. Deputy Jesús Faria said that the legal provisions are aimed at strengthening the Venezuelan State in the search for assets seized abroad by external agents. The legislator pointed out that the lack of access to these assets entails “terrible economic consequences for the people”, so whoever is an accomplice to this type of crime must be punished.

Another deputy explained that a commission designated for this purpose by the top of the parliament will work over the weekend to integrate the information sent, and next Monday they will meet again to prepare a report on the bill.

The proposal for this bill arose as a result of the decision of the United States government to strip Venezuela of the state company Citgo.
