Cape Verdean president defends referendum in Western Sahara

Cape Verdean President José María Neves is in favor of holding a referendum on the autonomy of the Saharan Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), which should be held for decades, and thus runs counter to the position of the government, which recognized the territorial integrity of Morocco.

“We hope that this referendum can take place so that this conflict that still exists in North Africa, in the Maghreb, can be effectively resolved for the benefit of the Saharan people. within the framework of the United Nations, respecting international law, so that people decide their future and decide their fate,” the head of state said in his speech as part of the Africa Day celebration in Praia, which is celebrated on May 25.

In the same speech, the head of state and former prime minister (from 2001 to 2016) of the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAIKV) recalled that the SADR declared its independence in 1979 and is a member of the African Union, awaiting a special mission. UN for holding a “referendum to determine the choice of the Saharan people”.
