Under no circumstances should oral care be neglected. It’s because? Because the mouth is a direct entrance to other vital organs. Speech, chewing, swallowing and the initial stages of digestion are vital functions in which it is involved.
When hygiene is not followed, bacteria accumulate, and with them plaque, which, as we have seen, gives rise to diseases of the oral cavity, which can later develop into more serious complications in terms of general health. Let’s look at what this relationship consists of, comorbidities, and the importance of good brushing.
Gum health and overall health. What relationships?
I’m sure you know that poor oral health can lead to oral problems. Examples are caries and gum disease.
What you probably didn’t know is that a lack of gum care can trigger or exacerbate chronic disease. Our circulatory system connects all parts of our body through blood. This causes problems that originate in the mouth, such as periodontitis, gingivitis, and receding gums, to easily migrate to other parts of the body, causing or exacerbating other types of disease.
Diseases associated with poor oral health
• Diabetes
• Cardiovascular diseases
• Neurodegenerative diseases
• Rheumatic diseases
• Inflammatory bowel disease
• Asthma
• Obesity

Scary numbers…
In Portugal, the paradigm is far from ideal. Or even acceptable. Many Portuguese neglect oral care and visits to the dentist.
The results of this table can be seen:
• 70% of the Portuguese do not have natural teeth
• More than 30% of the population have never been to a dentist or go only in an emergency.
• 9% of the population do not have natural teeth

These are the numbers that worry experts. Especially since, as we have seen, gum disease is closely related to chronic diseases. Now let’s evaluate the situation on this topic: 3.9 million people reported having at least one chronic disease.. These include arterial hypertension, acute myocardial infarction, stroke, chronic pain, osteoporosis.
Information analysis… a lot needs to change. Let’s start with the basics: taking care of our mouth.
Take care of your health. Start with gums. #ColgatePT #Healthy gums.
Prevention: routine and the right foods
First: a toothpaste that suits your needs
We rely on toothpaste and its indispensable action in removing plaque. Preferably, you should choose one that has a strong antibacterial effect. If you have formulations designed to prevent gum disease, all the better.
Brush your teeth at least twice a day (for example, after breakfast and dinner) for about 2 minutes. Attention! Don’t forget the language. There is much less space between the teeth. It is also recommended not to eat for two hours after brushing your teeth. Nighttime brushing should be the last step in your bedtime routine, which means you shouldn’t eat or drink (other than water) after brushing.

Second: choose a good brush + optimal combing
Don’t choose hard brushes. Choose one that is not abrasive. Brush your teeth gently, otherwise you are more likely to damage your gums and develop problems such as receding gums or tooth sensitivity in the future.
The head of the brush should be small, the bristles should be soft and rounded so as not to damage the gums. Thus, they will always be protected.
Keep flossing or interdental brushing.
To end big: a powerful elixir
Elixirs are able to destroy bacteria that linger in your mouth after brushing your teeth, leaving your breath fresher for longer. Thanks to their protective action on gums and teeth, they are a great addition to complete your routine.

Having a healthy mouth is not difficult.. The hardest part is repairing the damage. which could be fatal. In this month of gum health, we’re going to focus on the importance of protecting your mouth from plaque, cavities, and associated diseases. These precautions are necessary in all cases, especially in the most serious ones.
Proper hygiene through brushing, flossing, and elixir combined with regular dental visits (every six months) is the key to success. Healthy mouth, healthy body!
