Paraplegic walking again thanks to a device that provides a connection between the brain and spinal cord

According to an article published this Wednesday in the scientific journal Nature, a 40-year-old paraplegic Dutchman was able to walk again thanks to a device that provides a connection between the brain and spinal cord, allowing thought to control movement.

As a result of a bicycle accident 12 years ago, Gert-Jan Oskam was paralyzed in his legs and partially in his arms, after his spinal cord was damaged in the neck.

Gert-Jan Oskam can now stand, walk, climb stairs and even cross difficult terrain thanks to a device that creates a “digital bridge” between her brain and the nerves under the injury, Nature reports, noting that the Dutchman has regained the ability to walk with crutches even when the apparatus.
