Social media is an addiction for 86% of Portuguese youth.

There are more and more dependents on social media, with 86% of Portuguese young people admitting they are addicted, higher than the European average of 78%. Already 90% admit that they have used them since the age of 13.

The conclusion is based on Dove’s study of the impact of social media on mental health conducted in eight countries, which aims to bring this topic to the European Parliament and legitimize the platforms. It is through social networks that 80% of young people prefer to communicate, and most of them admit that they are bored if they cannot access various platforms.

The study also shows that two out of five young people are aware that social media is bad for them. “Eventually they come into contact with completely unusual beauty content, and when they compare themselves to models, it becomes obvious that they can’t help but feel worse,” says psychologist Eduardo Sa.

Already, 48% of parents feel guilty for not protecting their children from what they see and hear online, and 85% say laws are needed to hold platforms accountable for the damage done to young people’s mental health.
