Africa is one of the regions most affected by AIDS and an arena of treatment disparities.

According to UNICEF, Africa is one of the regions most affected by HIV/AIDS, with differences in treatment: pregnant and lactating women cover 60% in the western and central zone and 89% in the eastern and southern regions.

Geographic location is just one of three inequalities identified in the United Nations Children’s Fund’s (UNICEF) latest global report on children, HIV and AIDS, released this Monday on the occasion of World AIDS Day next Thursday.

“For the most part, three inequalities related to geography, gender and poverty have the greatest impact on children and adolescents affected by HIV,” the document says, adding: “Where the child was born, their gender and access to resources.” are key predictors of their vulnerability to HIV, their overall health and safety, their access to education, and their likelihood of remaining in poverty.”
