Seven islands in the Azores with orange and yellow warnings due to rain, thunderstorms and wind

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) issued yellow and orange warnings this Sunday for seven islands in the Azores due to the possibility of rain, thunderstorms and wind from Monday to Wednesday.

The eastern group islands (San Miguel and Santa Maria) are under an orange alert, the second highest on the scale, from 21:00 local time (22:00 in Lisbon) on Monday and 09:00 on Tuesday due to the forecast ” occasional heavy precipitation” which may be “accompanied by thunderstorms,” ​​the IPMA said in a statement.

From 09:00 to 21:00 on Monday and from 09:00 on Tuesday to 06:00 on Wednesday, the two islands are under a yellow warning, including due to the forecast of rain and thunderstorms.

For the islands of the central group (Terceira, Sao Jorge, Graciosa, Pico and Faial), a yellow warning was issued from Tuesday 06:00 to Wednesday 00:00 due to the possibility of “precipitation, sometimes heavy”. , which may be “accompanied by a thunderstorm”.

These five islands are also under a yellow warning due to a northeasterly wind forecast from Tuesday 09:00 to Wednesday 00:00.

According to the IPMA, an orange alert, the second highest on the scale, is issued for “moderate to high risk weather conditions.”

A yellow warning, the third highest on the scale, is issued for “risk situations for certain weather dependent actions”.
