The couple were detained by judicial police in Espinho for enslaving a Mozambican woman.
The detainees, aged 40 and 42, lured the victim to come to Portugal to study and work by subjecting her to “labor/domestic servitude” upon arrival in the country. In Portugal, the victim, a 29-year-old woman, was forced to work 16 hours a day and received 50 euros a month. According to the JV statement, the Mozambican was “deprived of documents” and was not entitled to “weekends or rest hours”.
The victim could only eat once a day and her hygiene was also limited. “He was diagnosed with severe anemia caused by a lack of food, and his general weakness and physical incapacity was notorious,” says PJ.
The detainees, both foreigners, will be presented to the competent judicial authority for the first judicial examination and the application of such measures of coercion as deemed appropriate.
