The verdict in the “Operation Malapata” case, which has football businessman Cesar Boaventura as its main defendant and is investigating player transfers, has been postponed until November 25, a source connected to the process told Lusa.
The hearing, originally scheduled for July 11, had already been postponed by a group of judges to this Tuesday due to the complexity of the process, but it has been postponed again and will take place at the end of November, starting at 9:30 a.m., at the São João Novo Court in Porto.
On June 20, in the final indictments of the so-called Operation Malapata, which is investigating player transfers and bank accounts through which thousands of euros passed, the Public Ministry (MP) demanded eight to 10 years in prison for Cesar Boaventura and the sentences for the other defendants were increased to the legal minimum, but with a suspended sentence.
The businessman is accused of five crimes related to qualified fraud, three of document forgery, one of qualified tax fraud and one of money laundering.
In February, Cesar Boaventura was sentenced to a total of three years and four months in prison, suspended, for three offences related to active corruption in football.
The Matosinhos court found that former Rio Ave players Cassio, Marcelo and Lyonne were hired to facilitate the fight against Benfica in the 2015/16 season in exchange for financial and contractual compensation, but cleared the businessman of attempted corruption against former Marítimo goalkeeper Romain Salin.
