Madeira airport traffic resumed after two days of air conditioning

Landings and takeoffs have already resumed at Madeira airport, driven by bad weather on the island since Monday, which has led to the cancellation of dozens of flights and affected thousands of passengers.

Information available on the official website of ANA-Aeroportos de Portugal indicates that since Tuesday morning, 13 aircraft of different airlines from Brussels, Lisbon, Budapest, Faro, Paris, Porto Santo, New York managed to land at Madeira Airport named after Cristiano Ronaldo . York, Berlin, Prague and Warsaw.

Also, according to ANA, 28 flights were canceled, and only four flights left before 18:30.

By 19:00 there was a landing on other flights.

Due to the Oscar Depression that affected Madeira, with heavy rainfall putting the northern coast and highlands of Madeira Island under a red alert until 3:00 pm, ANA activated an emergency plan for the island’s airport on Monday.

According to ANA, 28 flights were canceled on Monday, while 12 more departed to different airports or returned to their points of origin.

The storm mainly caused landslides, floods and tree fall in the municipalities of Funchal, Santa Cruz, Machico and Cámara de Lobos.

The municipalities most affected reported that 38 people were displaced.

The southern coast and mountainous areas of the island were under a red alert from 3:00 pm Monday to 3:00 pm Tuesday due to heavy and incessant rainfall due to the passage of the Oscar Basin.

A red alert, the most severe on a three-point scale, was issued by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), which recorded the most critical period from 06:00 to 09:00.

At the time, the archipelago was under a yellow wind warning and an orange rain warning.
