Bad weather leaves 38 people homeless in Madeira

Local authorities said Tuesday that 38 people have been displaced in Madeira due to bad weather that has affected the archipelago since Monday, 22 of whom are in Funchal, 15 in Câmara de Lobos and one in Santa Cruz.

In Funchal, the most serious situation is with six houses in the district of Santo António, in the upper part of the municipality.

“There was a landslide to the south of the houses and there is a danger of a landslide to the north as well,” Funchal Mayor Pedro Calado said in an audio recording sent to the Luz agency, which indicated that 18 people were injured.

“The normal social security procedures have already been activated, and we are sending these 18 people to a safe place,” he said.

The Municipality of Funchal is also engaged in the preventive resettlement of four additional people in the districts of Monte and San Pedro.

“Now it is important to create security conditions for the population and resolve these cases of displaced people,” said Pedro Calado.

In Câmara de Lobos, a municipality adjacent to Funchal to the west, three families were left homeless, the municipality said in a statement, specifying that it was a household of seven in the parish of Jardim da Serra and two households in total. eight people in the parish from Curral das Freiras.

“Affected families did not activate line 144. [apoio da Segurança Social]seeking relocation to the family home,” the note said.

The municipality has provided food for the Jardim da Serra family, but has not yet determined the nutritional needs of the Curral das Freiras families.

In the municipality of Santa Cruz, in the eastern part of Madeira, one person was also displaced due to the collapse of the roof of a house during the night.

The southern coast and mountainous areas of the island were under a red alert from 3:00 pm Monday to 3:00 pm Tuesday due to heavy and incessant rainfall due to the passage of the Oscar Basin.

A red alert, the most severe on a three-point scale, was issued by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), which recorded the most critical period from 06:00 to 09:00 on Tuesday.

At that time, the archipelago was under a yellow warning and this situation should continue until 18:00.
