During August, the Portuguese Navy coordinated 34 search and rescue operations, resulting in the rescue of 29 people on the Portuguese mainland and islands, it was announced on Monday.
The Navy’s report states that 21 incidents were recorded in the area of the Marine Search and Rescue Coordination Center (MSRC), and 18 people were rescued.
In the area of the MRCC Ponta Delgada, on the island of Sao Miguel, in the Azores, the perpetrators took part in 11 search and rescue operations, resulting in the rescue of 10 people.
On the island of Madeira, two such operations were coordinated at the Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Sub-Centre of Funchal, resulting in the rescue of a citizen.
The Navy also highlighted the support provided by commercial and fishing vessels, stating that they “deviate from their commercial routes and interrupt their professional activities to provide the necessary assistance”, always coordinated by the national MRCC centers of Lisbon and Delgada.
