The President of the Republic announced this Wednesday that the external celebration of Portugal Day 2024 will definitely be in Europe, because on June 9 next year, the Sunday before the holiday, the European elections will take place.
This option for the European continent, which he considered highly probable, was conveyed by Marcelo Rebelo de Souza in statements to reporters in Pretoria after summarizing his state visit to South Africa on Tuesday and during Portugal Day celebrations with the Portuguese communities living in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Pretoria.
When asked which country was chosen to host the celebration of Portugal Day in 2024, the head of state did not specify, but added that next year’s celebration “should be in Europe for now.”
“For a very simple reason: next year, Portugal Day falls on the day after the European Parliament elections. The European elections will take place on June 9, 2024, and Portugal Day will be next,” he said.
Given this calendar, according to Marcelo Rebelo de Souza, “a scheme like this cannot start outside the European continent”, in particular in South Africa, to later also celebrate Portugal Day in Peso da Régua. , Real Village area.
“The most natural thing is to be in Europe. I haven’t decided yet, but definitely in Europe,” he stressed.
The current model of a double celebration on June 10 in Portugal and abroad was launched by Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa in the year of his inauguration in 2016, together with Prime Minister António Costa.
This time, unlike what has happened in previous years, the June 10 celebration began abroad, five days before the official date, and will end in Portugal, in Peso da Régua, Vila Real district, where the ceremony will take place. . , Military June 10th.
