Europe wants to keep China away from 5G

The European Commission (EC) can force member states of the European Union to exclude “high-risk” providers when implementing 5G network technologies, namely those located outside the EU, NATO or the OECD, among other criteria. Among them will be the Chinese Huawei.

EU Commissioner for the Internal Market Thierry Breton informed the European in charge of telecommunications portfolios that only a third of countries have introduced bans in critical areas of 5G network implementation. Thus, the EC can continue to comply with this requirement.

Recall that in Portugal, the Security Assessment Commission within the High Council for Cybersecurity recently warned of a “high risk” to the security of 5G networks and services when using equipment from suppliers from countries where the legal system “allows the government to exercise control, interfere or pressure on its activities in third countries. The discussion does not mention company or country names, but the case of Huawei stands out as Chinese technology has been banned from 5G networks in the United Kingdom and Sweden. Meanwhile, the EC praised Portugal’s “deliberate decision” to take legal action to protect against “security threats”.

The matter is in the hands of the Evaluation Commission, Anacom said, but under current law, even if the government has a binding decision, it must enforce it. China has signaled through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that it expects Portugal to make “rational political choices” and self-reliance.
