Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa thanked the strength and perseverance of the nearly 500,000 Portuguese people living in Venezuela, whom he described as a “sustainable” community that contributes daily to local development.
“The Portuguese community in Venezuela is always resisting, always resisting, it was great in the past, great in the present and will be great in the future. A big, big hug and gratitude from the President of Portugal, but above all, from the Portuguese from all over the world,” he said.
Gratitude is shown in a video message shown on Saturday evening at the Portuguese Center in Caracas on the occasion of the visit of the Minister of the Interior of Portugal, José Luis Carneiro, and the celebration of June 10, Day of Portugal, Camões and Portuguese Communities.
“10 (June) is our day. This is the day of our homeland, our roots, our language, our history, our traditions (…) we are workers, loyal, persistent, persistent, with a family spirit, who are our strength, this is your strength in Venezuela, that’s what matters, “- he said.
Marcelo Rebelo de Souza began the video by saying that he sent a message through the Minister of the Interior to “compatriots in Venezuela”, “different communities that form a huge community of thousands and thousands and thousands who have worked and are working. with the Venezuelan people, of which they are also a part.”
The President of Portugal referred to some of the activities that the Portuguese carry out on the ground throughout the country, including “working in bakeries, street vending” during which they feel the “pulse of Venezuela”.
“I wanted to give a big, big hug,” points out Marcelo Rebelo de Souza, who explains he has been to South Africa, “from another great community that we have there.”
