Surrounded by several members of the Group for Intervention and Security in Prisons (GISP), the 25-year-old prisoner who staged a ostentatious escape from a Coimbra court three weeks ago was brought to trial on Monday under strict security measures. First, in the context of a theft process in the Figueira da Foz area, where, according to him, he has nothing to declare. He then changed rooms to judge the escape in summary form. However, the court decided that the case is now under investigation.
The evasion happened on May 22. Known as “Pinguim”, the prisoner took advantage of the moment he stepped out of a mobile van in Coimbra Court Park to escape prison guards. He managed to jump over a railing about two meters high, did not stop in front of three shots from the prison guards and disappeared through the streets of the city.
A man was in pre-trial detention after a street robbery in Figueira da Foz. But he already had a criminal record for theft and even had a suspended sentence of four years. After escaping, the prisoner took a taxi to Figueira da Foz, where he was captured by the PSP and returned to prison.
Back at the Coimbra Court, the prisoner was always closely monitored by the GISP, the special operations unit of the prison system. Security surrounded him in the courtroom.
