Portuguese series Rabo de Peixe will have a second season on Netflix

The Portuguese series Rabo de Peixe, created by director Augusto Fraga, will have a second season, streaming platform Netflix announced this Thursday.

The announcement that there will be a second season comes three weeks after the premiere of this fantasy series created by Ukbar Filmes and directed by Augusto Fraga and Patricia Sequeira.

“To all the people who have been moved, laughed and suffered along with the group of friends from Rabo de Peixe, we promise an exciting and amazing second season,” said the director, quoted in a Netflix statement.

According to the company, in the first two weeks of the show, Rabo de Peixe was one of the world’s “top ten” most-watched shows in languages other than English.

The series, which premiered on May 26, remains at number one in Portugal, according to Netflix.

The second season, whose production schedule has not yet been released, “provides an incredible opportunity to continue the work done and also to confirm the potential of Portuguese series at home and abroad,” said producers Pandora da Cunha Telles and Pablo Iraola. Ukbar Filmes, in the same press release.

Rabo de Peixe is the second Portuguese feature series made for Netflix, following Pedro López’s Gloria directed by Thiago Guedes and produced by SPI, which premiered in November 2021.

The story begins with a real event that took place in 2001, when a sailboat with half a ton of cocaine on board sank, with most of the drug washed ashore near Rabo de Peixe, on the island of San Miguel.

From these facts, a fiction was built about four friends who, with several kilograms of drugs, seek to change their lives, and about the police investigation of this shipwreck.

The four friends series is played by José Condessa, Helena Caldeira, Rodrigo Tomas and André Leitao, but there are also other names such as Albano Geronimo, Maria Joao Bastos, Afonso Pimentel, Pepe Rapazote and Adriano Carvalho.

In addition to Augusto Fraga, editor Marcos Castiel and director of photography André Szankowski also contributed to the series.

“Rabo de Peixe” was one of ten winning projects in a screenplay competition organized by Netflix in association with the Instituto do Cinema e do Audiovisual.
