Mozambican musician Salimo Muhamad has died

Mozambican musician Salimo Muhamad, an expert on the country’s cultural development, died Wednesday evening in Maputo from a long illness at the age of 75, it was announced Thursday.

The author of songs such as “Sambrowera fandango” and “Mamana Maria”, an artist named Domingos Simiane Mazuze, born in Xai-Xai, Gaza Province, on August 13, 1948, was hospitalized for several days at the Central Hospital of Maputo.

“How did last night end? [quarta-feira]”I am saddened to learn of the physical disappearance of the renowned Mozambican artist, musician Salimo Muhamad, also known as Simiane Mazuzé,” Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi wrote on his official Facebook account on Thursday.

“With a unique voice, Salimo Muhamad contributed to the creation of a benchmark for Mozambican art in the post-independence period, being one of the artists involved in the early years of Banda RM,” he added.

The head of state acknowledged his participation “in the development of national culture” and his “irreverence for the creation of sounds and rhythms that identified Mozambican cultural identity.”

“He leaves a huge void in Mozambican art. We are convinced that the work he did, which inspired millions of Mozambicans, will continue to be present among us,” concludes the message of the President of the Republic.
