Health authorities in Angola’s Cabinda province have been notified of a suspected case of the Mpox virus, with samples collected for shipment to Luanda, local media reported on Friday.
According to Cabinda Provincial Health Minister Ruben Buco, the young man was admitted to the emergency room of a health facility in the province “with injuries typical of the disease.”
“He is still classified as a suspected case, the epidemiological surveillance team, the rapid response laboratory network have already arrived on the scene and samples have been taken,” Ruben Buco said, quoted by the press.
The person in charge stressed that everything is being done to send the sample this Friday or Saturday to the National Institute of Medical Research in the capital of Angola, Luanda, to see if it is Mpox or not.
The Minister of Health of the province of Cabinda stressed that the province has already registered five more suspected cases that have been admitted to local hospitals.
“In previous cases the diagnosis was negative and the disease [identificadas]”There were measles (two cases), scabies (two cases) and one case of chickenpox. The possibility that it was Mpox has been ruled out,” he said.
Angola’s Ministry of Health recently announced that it is maintaining an active state of alert to prevent the spread of Mpox in the country, after the African Union (AU) and the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a public health emergency.
