Mexican authorities found 129 migrants in a truck with goods

Mexican authorities found 129 migrants of various nationalities crammed into a truck in the eastern state of Veracruz, the National Institute for Migration (INM) said on Sunday.

Migrants “from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and India” were spotted on Friday evening, the INM said in a statement, cited by France’s AFP news agency.

INM reported that 51 migrants from Guatemala were sent back to the country, to the city of Tecun-Umán (centre).

Nineteen unaccompanied minors from Guatemala and Honduras were taken to a special reception center and the rest were taken to a shelter.

Four alleged smugglers were arrested and handed over to the Attorney General’s Office, as well as two vehicles that guarded the truck, which were confiscated, Mexican newspaper Crónica reported.

Thousands of migrants from different countries cross Mexico every day, trying to reach the United States of America.

Along the way, they often become victims of organized crime groups or human traffickers.

The region is facing an unprecedented migration flow, with more than 2.76 million undocumented people intercepted by the United States at the border with Mexico in 2022, according to Crónica.
