Serbian protesters, mostly truck drivers, blocked two important border posts between Kosovo and Serbia on Tuesday, preventing other vehicles from passing, Kosovo authorities said today.
“Due to protests in Serbian territory at the Jarinje and Merdare border crossings, it is impossible for trucks and buses to pass from Kosovo,” Kosovo Foreign Minister Donika Gervalla said in a statement posted on the website of the Hoa newspaper. Pristina.
Today’s protests exacerbate tensions between Pristina and Belgrade following the arrest by Serbian police of “three Kosovo (police) agents” accused of allegedly planning a “terrorist attack.”
Belgrade indicates that the arrests took place on Serbian territory, while Pristina claims that the Kosovo police officers were abducted on Kosovo territory, 300 meters from the border with Serbia.
Pristina is demanding the release of three police officers and has stepped up border controls with Serbia, a country that does not recognize Kosovo’s 2008 independence.
Since June 14, Kosovo border posts have practically blocked the passage of heavy vehicles with Serbian plates that intend to enter Kosovo.
In response, Serbian truck drivers have blocked the passage of heavy vehicles and buses with Kosovo numbers in Yarinje and Merdar since Sunday evening.
The situation was confirmed to journalists in Pristina at the Kosovo Border Control Center.
In an attempt to defuse the situation, European Union Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell suggested that Serbian Head of State Aleksandar Vučić and Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti call an emergency meeting to be held this week in Brussels.
Although the proposal has already been sent, the date of a possible meeting is not yet known.
