Heads of emergency departments at Santa Maria Hospital resign

The leaders of the emergency obstetric care teams at Santa Maria Hospital in Lisbon have resigned. The letter of resignation was signed by more than a dozen professionals, according to SIC Notícias.

The specialists refuse to work overtime and claim that they were threatened by the hospital administration.

Work on a maternity ward at Santa Maria Hospital due to be completed in early August and a move to San Francisco Javier (HSFX) have sparked a war between doctors.

The layoffs come two days after more than 30 professionals sent a letter to the administration of the Centro Hospitalar Universitário de Lisboa Norte and the leadership of the National Health Service, challenging the project and questioning the capabilities of the HSFX facilities. Some are threatening to go into the private sector.

Director of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Medicine at Centro Hospitalar Lisboa Norte, Diogo Aires de Campos, was also fired for questioning a restructuring project at Santa Maria Hospital and a collaboration with San Francisco Xavier.
