The Dutch government stops gas production at one of the largest fields in the world

Gas production at one of the world’s largest fields will end in October, the Dutch government announced on Friday, signaling the end of an important source of profit, but also of social unrest associated with the earthquake.

“Production will end on October 1, after 60 years,” Prime Minister Mark Rutte said.

However, he acknowledged that operations could continue beyond that date in the event of a “perfect storm”, an extremely cold winter scenario, and problems with gas storage from other sources, given concerns over supplies resulting from the invasion of Ukraine. Russian Federation.

Faced with growing anger from people whose homes have been hit repeatedly by earthquakes, the government has already cut production to a level that would allow facilities in the region to continue operating.

Thousands of homeowners are still waiting for their homes to be repaired after years of earthquakes have damaged buildings. Thousands more are waiting for compensation.

Groninger Bodem Beweging, an organization representing people in the region, called the announcement “a step in the right direction.”
