PSD kicks off four health days today with visits and offers

This Monday, PSD kicks off four days dedicated to health, which include visits by Luis Montenegro to hospitals and medical centers, and the presentation of a “policy guiding document” for the sector.

Scheduled for this Monday morning is a meeting of the SDP Standing Committee – the limited core of the direction – on health issues, followed by a press conference on the day that passes the year that Montenegro was enshrined in Congress as the president of the Social Democrats.

Last Thursday in Brussels, the leader of the Social Democrats announced that this week the party will present “a document defining the basic principles of policy that can put an end to the deterioration of the National Health Service (SNS) and ensure the health of the population.”

“As acknowledged by the State Financial Board, health care management has been particularly inefficient. With more money, we cannot meet people’s needs for consultations, surgeries and even family medicine, more and more Portuguese do not have access to a family doctor,” he said.

This Monday afternoon, Montenegro will visit the Garcia de Orta Hospital in Almada (Setubal), and on Tuesday the Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve in Faro and Bial in Trofa (Porto).

The program, not yet fully disclosed, will run until Thursday and culminate in a debate set by the PSD in the Assembly of the Republic, during which the five draft resolutions already submitted last week will be discussed and voted on.

Recommendations to the government (without the force of law) focus on strengthening the social network, spreading family doctors, access to medicines and continuous and palliative care, as well as reducing queues for operations, consultations and examinations.

The PSD recommends to the government, for example, that “all revenue generated from the tax on soft drinks and the 3% tax on tobacco”, which is estimated at 100 million euros per year, should go towards health promotion and disease control. prevention through information campaigns.

The Social Democrats will also renew their defense of public-private partnerships, either for the private management of public units or for the direct realization of health benefits, “whenever such options are more beneficial in terms of the binomial quality-cost ratio.”

Other recommendations include in the remuneration of medical workers by the SNA “remuneration depending on the products performed and the improvement in health obtained” or the creation of a Health Map (an up-to-date database of health infrastructure and equipment, public, private or social).

With regard to access to continuous and palliative care, the OSChS is asking the government, with specific targets until 2026, to increase the number of beds in both areas and the financial contribution from the state.

In order to reduce waiting times for surgeries, consultations and examinations, the Social Democrats are advocating additional incentives to restore aid activities programmed in the SNS and to sign contracts with private sector, social sector and health professionals. self-employment mode: “whenever the maximum guaranteed response time is exceeded.”

The PSD also wants the government to “follow the prime minister’s promise made in 2016 to appoint a family doctor to all Portuguese” if necessary, using the social and private sectors to guarantee universal coverage by the end of this year. the entire population.
