Brazil dismantles airport baggage exchange network to send cocaine to Europe

On Tuesday, the Brazilian Federal Police issued 18 arrest warrants in the state of São Paulo as part of an operation to crack down on a criminal organization that was shipping cocaine to European countries, including Portugal, by changing passengers’ bags at the airport.

“We inform you that 18 arrest warrants have been served, including two preventive orders and 16 temporary arrest warrants. Two people with temporary arrest warrants are on the run. 27 search and seizure warrants were also served,” the Brazilian Federal Police (PF) said. , in the statement.

The detainees are responsible for sending more than 120 kg of cocaine to Europe.

The Brazilian authorities recalled that in March, two Brazilian women were unfairly imprisoned for 38 days in a prison in Frankfurt, Germany, in a case that made headlines in Brazil.

Two Brazilians were arrested when they landed in Germany because cocaine was found in bags with their names on them.

“It turned out that the bags were not theirs, the tags were removed from their ordinary bags and they were placed in bags with cocaine inside,” the OF reminded, adding that already in March, employees of the Guarulhos International Airport, who were part of the criminal network scheme, were detained.

“The case caused a great resonance, and the deepening of the investigation led to the fact that the federal police at Guarulhos International Airport identified the organizers of the crime, as well as other members of the criminal organization, who also sent cocaine twice. to Portugal in October 2022 and to France in March this year,” the authorities said.
