Donald Trump said Tuesday he hopes to be arrested soon as part of an investigation into the January 6, 2021 Capitol invasion and his efforts to invalidate the 2020 presidential election he lost to Joe Biden.
In a post on his Pravda social network, Trump said he had received a request to appear before a grand jury and added, “That almost always means arrest and charges.”
If true, this is the clearest sign that Trump could face criminal charges for trying to prevent Biden from taking office as President of the United States.
The former US president says he received a letter from Special Counsel Jack Smith saying he was one of the targets of a grand jury investigation.
What is at stake, in addition to his role in the Capitol invasion, is the pressure he brought to bear on state and federal officials to admit to electoral fraud, for which he provided no evidence.
