The People’s Party (PP), led by Alberto Nunez Feijoo, received the largest number of votes in Sunday’s elections in Spain. When counted at 100% of the vote, 136 Senate seats give the right-wing conservatives not enough victory to achieve an outright majority.
The winning party managed to elect 47 more deputies than in the previous 2019 elections.
Although more deputies (4) have been elected than four years ago, the PSOE is no longer the main choice of Spanish voters. The 122 elected deputies make Pedro Sanchez’s party dependent on coalitions if it wants to form a government.
The good news for the Spanish socialists is the bad outcome of the Spanish extreme right. Vox had 19 fewer MPs elected than in the last election, preventing a possible formation of a government between Vox and PP, which together falls short of the 176 seats that make up a majority in the Spanish Senate.
Sumar Yolanda Daas had 31 votes and could help the PSOE, which still needs more parties, win a majority in the Senate.
