The Barcelos Court sent back to prison a 52-year-old man who was registered this Wednesday by the Judicial Police of Braga on suspicion of starting a forest fire in Durraes, Barcelos municipality.
The detainee, José Enrique Meireles, has already served at least two effective terms for wildfires in the same parish where he lives. He was last tried in 2017 in Braga, where he was sentenced to seven years in prison. Earlier this year, he was released from prison and committed the same crime again.
According to the SP statement, the detainee acted “under the influence of fire”. “The location where the fire occurred is located in an area with conditions for the spread of a large forest area, which creates a huge risk, potentially fueled by the fuel supply there and the region’s own geographical position, which has turned into a specific danger to people, their assets and the environment,” the police said in a statement.
