61 people drowned in the first half of the year

According to the Portuguese Lifeguards Federation (FEPONS), 60 people drowned in the first six months of the year, noting that despite a decrease in the number of cases compared to the same period last year, the numbers are still high.

In a statement, FEPONS cites data from the Observatory for the Drowned to show that, despite the decline from the same period last year (68 deaths), it is still higher than the average for the past six years (56 deaths).

He also highlights that 2022 was the worst year of the last 18 in this area.

According to the Drowning Observatory report, 51 of those who drowned in the first six months of the year were men, and more than half (55.3%) were over 40 years of age.

According to the document, 16 cases occurred in April, 12 in June, and 10 in January; no cases were registered in the controlled territories.

FEPONS also indicates that 36 (60%) of the drownings occurred during the day, 25 at sea, 21 in a river, four in domestic pools, three in dams, three more in harbors/marinas, and two in wells.

He adds that 11 cases occurred during leisurely swimming, four due to vehicles falling into the water, two during recreational line fishing, two during recreational net fishing, and others from on-site cleaning.

In terms of geographical distribution, 10 cases (16.7%) occurred in Faro district, eight (13.1%) in Lisbon, eight (13.1%) in Leiria, seven (11.5%) in Setúbal and six ( 9.8%) in Porto.
