Eloa dos Passos, a five-year-old girl, died this Saturday from a bullet during an operation carried out by the military police of Rio de Janeiro. Eloa was at home in Morro do Dende playing jumping on her bedroom bed when a large caliber bullet went through the wall of the house and fatally hit her in the chest.
The tragedy occurred when the agents opened fire in an attempt to disperse a crowd of hill residents protesting another death, also attributed to the military police, 17-year-old Wendel Eduardo. Wendel and his friend were pulled over by police at dawn this Saturday as they were leaving a funk dance on a motorcycle.
According to agents, Wendel, who was following the motorcyclist, saw the police, grabbed a gun and started shooting. Residents of Morro do Dende, located on the island of Ilha do Governador in the northern part of the city, guarantee that the teenager was not armed and that he was killed by agents, despite raising his hands as he approached.
The populace, outraged by this death, about an hour later went to Avenida Paranapua, where the fatal offensive took place, to protest and demand justice. The police returned to the scene, already reinforced and reportedly already on the hill, firing in all directions, a common policing practice in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro.
It was during this flurry of shots that Eloa was wounded and fell bloodied onto the bed. Relatives took her to the hospital, but the girl could not stand the severe injury.
A Rio de Janeiro military police statement said they were informed of Eloa’s death but had nothing to do with it and don’t even know how it happened. A few days ago, in another favela of Rio de Janeiro, Cidade de Deus, police also killed 13-year-old boy Thiago Flausino, whom agents first called a dangerous criminal who shot at them, but later found out that it was just a criminal . child.
