Luz Contreras, accompanied by her children, made her dream come true when she arrived in Portugal on June 27. The 50-year-old Colombian left the American continent for Europe in order to visit the Sanctuary of Fatima. But fate did not have it so. It was on the day that the woman had scheduled the visit, two days after arriving in Portugal, that Luz felt ill and developed a high fever. She was admitted to the hospital da Luz, where she was from 29 June to 7 July. At the request of the Colombian Embassy in Portugal, Luz was transferred from private to public and was taken care of by Santa Maria Hospital.
Diagnosis: pyogenic streptococcus (highly infectious pathogenic bacteria often causing pharyngitis. This species can also cause more serious illnesses such as scarlet fever and rheumatism). Luz had to be put into a coma for six days due to toxic shock caused by bacteria.

Already in the interim treatment on July 21, doctors recommended that the Colombian be transferred to her country, as recovery could take eight to 12 months. But three weeks later, the condition of the infection changed, which meant that doctors were forced to amputate his lower limbs.
On social media, Luz posted a video in which she talks about the success of the operation, as well as what is on the mend. Despite this, the woman remains hospitalized at the Santa Maria hospital, waiting to see what will happen to her arms, which are also at risk of amputation.
In this sense, the family has created a fundraiser on the GoFundMe platform so that all interested parties can help with the costs, which already exceed 44 thousand euros, only in the hospital da Luz.
