PSD requires PS to approve tax cut proposal

This Wednesday, the SDP challenged the PS to say whether it “accepts the tax cut” and approves the proposal presented by the Social Democrats, or intends to “continue to use fiscal policy to replenish the state treasury.”

At a conference at the SDP’s national headquarters in Lisbon, party vice-president António Leitao Amaro detailed the outlines of the financial proposal presented on Monday by Luis Montenegro, given that there is a “serious problem” in Portugal. with the Portuguese “paying too much taxes”.

“But the SDP has a solution: cut taxes now, as part of a fundamental fiscal reform. The question that arises at this point remains: what does the PS do? taxes and the tax burden continues to grow. Will the PS accept this challenge or not, leaving politics behind?

Miranda Sarmento said that the tax cut proposal presented this Monday by the leader of the PSD will be implemented in five legislative initiatives to be discussed and voted on September 20 in the Assembly of the Republic, taking into account that the Social Democrats noted the potestative (binding) debate at this date.

On that day, “it will become clear to the country whether the PS really wants to cut taxes for families or, on the contrary, continues to get confused in politics, in excuses and using fiscal policy to increase the cost of income and to replenish the state coffers,” he said.

Asked about PS criticism that accuses PSD of pulling off a “monumental backflip” by now prioritizing IRS descent over IRC, contrary to what they suggested on the 2022 legislative election platform, Miranda Sarmento referred to the change in leadership of the SDP to indicate that Montenegro has “its own program” and, since he was elected, “advocates tax cuts, namely in the IRS”.

The leader of the social democratic parliament also added that the SDP’s election program was drawn up in December 2021, when “inflation was about 1.5%”, recalling that this figure rose to 7.8% last year, which led to increase in income. 5.5 billion euros in national accounts” and “about eight billion euros” in government accounts.

“Therefore, there is a new circumstance here, which was not expected when the parties drew up their election programs. (…) New circumstances naturally imply a change in policies and measures, and if this were not the case, then this would not be the most correct way to manage and submit proposals,” he defended.
