The Judicial Police (PJ) said this Monday that it is “very premature” to classify a gun shooting that killed a 13-year-old child on Sunday in Ponte da Barca, Viana do Castelo district, as an accident.
“Without other types of examinations, analyzes and investigations, it is too early to say that this was an accidental shot,” a Braga police source told Luce.
The same source added that “since this is a death caused by a firearm, an autopsy is mandatory.”
“The result of the autopsy may be one of the determining factors in making some conclusions,” he said.
The child’s death occurred at the family home located in Sant Martinho de Castro, in the municipality of Ponte da Barca.
“The circumstances under which the tragic incident occurred are being investigated. This is a very dramatic family situation and in this sense we must be very careful,” he stressed.
The hunting rifle belongs to the grandfather of a 13-year-old boy.
“According to current legislation, firearms of any type should never be loaded and be within the reach of third parties. They must be properly stored in a safe, and even inside the safe they cannot be loaded,” he explained. same source as PJ.
The incident was recorded on Sunday at 11:40.
A team of psychologists was called to the site to support the family, who lives in France and is on vacation in Portugal.
In addition to GNR and PJ, Ponte da Barca firefighters were called to the scene.
