A 37-year-old Italian banker was hailed as a “hero” in Italy after he caught a three-year-old girl who fell from a fifth-floor balcony in Turin on Saturday morning.
Mattia Aguzzi was heading to a pastry shop with his girlfriend when he heard the screams of a man standing on the sidewalk and saw the smallest girl hanging.
“I heard the screams of a man when he noticed a child on the balcony. The girl continued to bend over more and more. She was supported by her arms, and her legs hung down,” Mattia Aguzzi said in a statement to the publication. sky24.
The “hero” also yelled at the girl to stand her ground and try to return to the house, but to no avail. “When she started to fall, I went over, closed my eyes and hoped that everything would go well. I caught her fall and we both fell to the ground,” he said.
The man adds: “At first I did not feel any signs of life, suddenly the girl began to cry, and I breathed a sigh of relief.” Both Aguzzi and the minor were hospitalized with minor injuries.
Prime Minister Georgia Meloni reacted to the incident and showed “great gratitude and honor” to the person who prevented the tragedy.
Turin Mayor Stefano Lo Russo said the “hero” should be respected. “The actions of Mattia Aguzzi, who seized [a criança] autumn and saved his life – this is a heroic act,” he wrote on Facebook.
Despite numerous accolades, Aguzzi declined the award. “Don’t call me a hero. I did everything naturally. I didn’t think about anything, I did what needed to be done,” he clarified.
Italian authorities are investigating the incident.
